Bringing your community a Library of eclectic shapes to ride

We are The Goat Shed, NZ’s first Surfboard Library hosted by the Sumner Community Hub. Started by two wondering goats from a different continent passionate about surfing that got bonded by the Moana (Ocean) of Otautahi, Aotearoa.

These goats have settled in the small yet vibrant village of Sumner in New Zealand, where surfing culture has been a constant since an early date becoming the home of a number of pioneers and legends of the surfboard-shaping world.

It was while exploring the deeper realm of this ‘sport’, such as the origins, the evolution and the future trends, that a feeling to further connect with Surfing made the goats put together a humble shed to allow them to build their first surf crafts and experiment with traditional and modern ideas.

The story contiunes

Evolution

Shortly, the hobby became a passion, and there was a need to share the stoke with the surrounding community to allow a bigger flow of ideas and feelings. And what a better way of doing it that starting a Community Surfboard Library, where the knowledge gained could be shared with the broader public and ultimately giving everyone a chance to experiment the tangible outcome of this passion: an ever expanding collection of unique surfboards built locally.

The idea became alive with the vision of going beyond the current mainstream surfboard industry. So far, The Goat Shed has become a hub open to anyone who is willing to take their passion about the ocean a step further by allowing anyone to learn and explore the theory and physical emotions that the different set of glides embodies beyond what meets the eye. With the idea of achieving a more connected, environmentally and mentally healthy community.

Breaking Barries

Whether you don’t have access to the right equipment, the knowledge, the confidence, the motivation or a crew to get in the water we are here to help.

Saving The Surf Culture

In this modern age it seems easy to forget how our amazing sport was originated, how it evolved and the core principles of this practice, such as the connection between a local shaper and the surfer and the true feeling of connection with the ocean

Empower Creativity

Surfing is based around free form, flow state and creativity due to its nature. We want to promote this values outside the water as well, where we spend most of our time and nurture these attributes.

Community Connection

We are part of an ever growing collective of like-minded people and provide a vibrant hub for gathering, empowering and inspiring each other.

Wellbeing

Surf Therapy has been proved to be a great wellbeing source, both for physical health as well as for mental health. We believe that surfing more translates into a better mind and body.

Sustainability

Seeing the ocean as our playground and wealing ground we are highly environmentally focused. We want to change the vision of an old industry and expose more environmentally friendly practices
